Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A)

What is a CDL-A?

A CDL-A is a type of commercial driver’s license required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed vehicle is heavier than 10,000 pounds. It is necessary for driving large trucks, tractor-trailers, and buses. Holding a CDL-A opens up a world of opportunities in the transportation industry.

Training Requirements

In order to obtain a CDL-A, you must first meet a set of training requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old to drive within state lines and at least 21 years old to drive across state lines or carry hazardous materials.

  • Driver's License: You must have a valid driver's license.

  • Physical Health: You must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.

  • CDL Training: You must complete a state-approved CDL training program.

What to Look for in a Class

There are several factors to consider when choosing a CDL-A class:

  • Comprehensive Curriculum: The class should cover everything from basic vehicle operation to safety regulations and truck maintenance.

  • Experienced Instructors: Look for classes taught by instructors who have real-world experience in the transportation industry.

  • Flexible Schedules: If you are working or have other commitments, you may need a class that offers flexible scheduling options.

What to Expect from the Day-to-Day Class

Attending a CDL-A class involves both classroom learning and hands-on training. You will learn about vehicle inspection, defensive driving, map reading, accident procedures, and more. Hands-on training usually takes place in a controlled environment where you can practice maneuvers and learn how to operate a large vehicle safely.

What Does the Certification Process Look Like?

The certification process involves both a written exam and a skills test. The written exam covers topics such as traffic laws, safety procedures, and vehicle operation. The skills test includes a pre-trip inspection, a basic vehicle control test, and an on-road driving test.
