Students will learn about the settings, work outline and responsibilities of a patient care technician; the Patient’s Bill of Rights, infection control and first aid; vital signs; supportive, elderly, palliative and hospice care; medical terminology; medical conditions as they relate to the body systems; phlebotomy and EKG (See phlebotomy and EKG program descriptions above).
Students will master the following skill sets: following infection control and safety guidelines; performing an accurate assessment of vital signs; applying dressings, turning, positioning and transferring patients; learning the correct use for restraints, assisting with dressing and ambulation, identifying, handling and disposing of infectious and hazardous waste; performing phlebotomy, EKG, urinalysis, glucose and hematocrit and hemoglobin testing. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to sit for the MedCA certification exam.
