This program is designed to teach students the skills necessary for employment in hospitals or surgical out-patient centers to work as sterile processing technicians, central supply workers, material management workers, and inventory technicians. Students will develop a variety of skills and competencies using supplies, instruments, and equipment during their clinical skills lab rotation in the school’s lab area. Skills covered include how to clean, inspect, assemble, decontaminate, prepare, and sterilize instrument trays for surgical procedures, disinfect patient care equipment, and the various methods of inventory control, storage and distribution of sterile supplies, medical devices, and equipment, especially for patients undergoing surgical procedures. Employment opportunities exist in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, surgical centers, and birth centers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the need for Sterile Processing Technicians will increase by approximately 14.5% between now and 2024. The program includes theory, lab, and clinical lab skills training. Our program has been designed to offer flexibility for our students, such as hybrid classes. This program consists of online instructional learning, lectures using video-conferencing software, interactive tutorials, engaging with class peers in group discussions moderated by faculty, virtual group projects, and a face-to-face clinical practicum. All theory coursework is virtual and does not require students to be on campus to access it. In-person, hands-on skills performance is required to demonstrate competence in clinical knowledge and abilities. Students will receive supervised clinical lab skills training.
