EKG Curriculum Purpose: Prepare students for real-world performance as EKG technicians.

 

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system
    • Describe the anatomy of the heart
    • Identify the major structures of the vascular system
    • Identify phases of the cardiac cycle
    • Define the functional properties of cardiac muscle
    • Describe the differences between normal and abnormal heart sounds
  • Obtain basic patient vital signs
  • Initiate CPR and first aid when necessary
  • Explain the purpose of EKG monitoring
    • Describe how EKG wave forms are produced
    • Know the cardiac areas represented by the EKG leads
    • Determine heart rate and rhythm
    • Know how to set and adjust the EKG monitor settings to various patient situations
    • Demonstrate a working knowledge of various EKG lead systems
    • Demonstrate how to record an EKG
  • Perform 30 live EKGs
    • Record and verify leads
    • Maintain and ensure proper functioning of EKG equipment
    • Prepare the patient
    • Apply electrodes for EKG monitoring
    • Monitor patients during procedures
  • Assist patients before, during and after procedures
