Anyone can benefit from getting a flu shot, even healthy adults. Not only will you be less likely to get sick, but you’ll prevent others from catching the flu from you. This is especially important if you live or work around others who are at high risk of serious complications from the flu – pregnant women, babies and young children, the elderly and people with chronic health problems. We support the recommendation of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Everyone six months of age and older needs a flu vaccine, every year.
Occupational therapy develops a child’s or adult’s ability to complete activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, eating, doing housework or schoolwork, or performing job-related tasks. It can help them improve hand-eye coordination, develop strength in their wrists and hands, improve fine motor skills, reach developmental milestones and learn to use adaptive equipment or techniques. To learn whether occupational therapy might be helpful in your situation, talk to your healthcare provider.
Speech-language pathology helps patients develop or regain their speech, language, cognitive communication, and swallowing skills. Adults may need speech-language pathology after a stroke or traumatic accident that changes their ability to communicate. Parkinson’s disease, dementia and other neurological conditions can affect communication and may be treated by speech therapy. Children may need speech-language pathology when they are delayed in reaching developmental milestones or when conditions affecting speech, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, cleft palate, learning disabilities, hearing impairment, genetic disorders, prematurity or a brain injury have been identified. Both adults and children may need to see a speech-language pathologist if they are having swallowing difficulties. Symptoms of swallowing problems include coughing and choking at meals, unexplained weight loss and frequent pneumonias.
