The HVAC Apprenticeship program prepares students for employment or advanced training in the heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration and ventilation industry. Registered Apprenticeship is a highly structured training system in which the apprentice works full-time (40 hours per week) during the day for a sponsoring employer, learning skills of the trade. Apprentices earn a progressive wage—as their skills increase, their wages increase (usually every six months). There are both union (joint) and non-union (non-joint) programs. Apprenticeship programs are required to follow state and federal apprenticeship rules and regulations. The Heating and Air Conditioning Installer Servicer Apprenticeship program is a three-year program. Students must be working in the field to be eligible for this program.
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program provides English instruction for adults 16 years of age or older, whose first language is not English. Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in subject areas including workplace, life, and civics. In addition, students benefit from forming friendships with classmates and participating in social activities and field trips, which help expand their experiential education. FTC's ESOL classes are conveniently offered during both days and evenings, and are available in beginner, intermediate, advanced, and academic skill levels. Progressive levels of grammar structure, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and living skills are taught to help the non-English speaker adjust to American life and prepare them to enter the job market or continue their education. Students are placed in appropriate classes according to their skill level, based on the CASAS evaluation. This test measures basic listening and reading skills needed to function effectively at work and in life. Students periodically participate in CASAS testing to evaluate their progress and determine when they should advance to the next level class. When students complete the highest level of ESOL instruction, they may participate in a graduation ceremony, complete with cap and gown. Students are encouraged to enroll in other academic and vocational classes upon completion of ESOL classes. Students who wish to continue academic studies may enroll in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) for ESOL class, or a GED class. Other transition options include FTC career training programs, or other college programs.
