The Phlebotomy Technician, generally known as a blood collector, is an individual who performs lab draws or collects blood samples. They typically collect and transport a specimen other than venous blood (arterial blood, urine, tissues, sputum) and may also perform some clinical and technical functions. However, the phlebotomist's primary function is in assisting the other members of the healthcare team in maintaining the accurate, safe, and reliable collection and transportation of specimens for clinical laboratory analyses. The phlebotomy training program teaches students the standard clinical medical laboratory procedures and laboratory studies and instructions covering topics like specimen collection, urinalysis, basic office bacteriology, hematology, and chemistry.
