The Associate of General Studies (AGS) degree is designed for students who are working and need a degree and specific skills for their current job or a job upgrade. Though many of the courses are transferable, the degree is not particularly designed for students seeking to transfer to a four-year institution. Students should work closely with their advisor to determine the appropriate electives for this degree. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better and complete at least 15 hours at ASU-Beebe to graduate.
Computer information systems intertwines technology with managing business and solving operational problems. This program prepares the student to enter the challenging field of computer information systems with knowledge of programming, database management and systems analysis. The program is designed to meet the business community's demand for adequately trained information systems specialists and provide students with a solid background to advance in this rapidly expanding field. Students learn how to develop, design, manage and maintain business technology infrastructure, as well as inform businesses of their specific technology needs.
Computer systems and networking technology is a hands-on approach to teaching PC/networking and computer hardware/software. Emphasis is not only placed on the hardware skills of computer systems but also on the soft skills, including written and verbal communication, that businesses and industries demand of their employees.
The computerized machining technology program will provide students with the knowledge for designing, prototyping and manufacturing machined parts. By working with computer numerical control (CNC) machine technologies, students are able to make tools, dies, molds, and other objects using 3D printing, high-tech lathes, or milling equipment. SolidWorks and MasterCam software are used to design parts, while lathe and mill machines manufacture the designed parts.
The health information technology program teaches students the duties and responsibilities of health care managers, medical billing and coders, medical records specialists, billing and posting clerks, medical transcriptionists, and business administrative assistants and office managers. Through textbooks, applications and simulations, students are given the opportunity to develop the skills required for this field of study. These skills include ICD-10-CM/PCS & CPT coding, insurance and billing, medical transcription, medical records management and reception area responsibilities.
The industrial technology program prepares students to obtain marketable technical skills in various areas. Students will be trained in several technologies employed in manufacturing plants and qualified in many fundamental skills that will provide a foundation for potential careers in the industry or maintenance of commercial and residential complexes. The program covers machining, pneumatics, hydraulics, electricity, drafting, quality control, hand tools, mechanical power and welding.
A graphic design student at Arkansas State University-Beebe will develop the knowledge and skills to integrate communication and critical thinking in all spheres of design. Students will become familiar with design fundamentals, mobile/web technology and user experience while preparing to transfer to a baccalaureate institution.
The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts (AALA) is a 60-credit-hour general education transfer degree that requires courses in English/writing, the humanities and fine arts, history and the social sciences, mathematics, and the natural sciences. The AALA is designed for students who wish to take the first two years of a baccalaureate program before transferring to a four-year institution and guarantees that the general education core is satisfied at Arkansas four-year institutions. All electives must be chosen from the state-mandated directed electives list (see pages 96-98 of the catalog). Students who prefer a broader range of elective opportunities should choose the Associate of Science in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The diesel technology program trains students to repair and maintain farm equipment, industrial equipment, heavy-duty trucks and other heavy equipment. There is an increasing demand for mechanics in this field due to the growth in diesel engines used in everyday vehicles, mobile equipment and farming equipment.
The heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) technology program provides students with the opportunity to obtain skills that will prepare them for jobs ranging from semi-skilled workers who perform the operation and maintenance tasks, to plant superintendents who are responsible for the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems that may cost millions of dollars. The refrigeration and air condition industry field is so broad that no one could encompass it. This is why students seeking a career in this field should acquire the primary education that will form a solid foundation for the technical education required to qualify for a good job in the HVACR industry.
ASU-Beebe offers two-year Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science degrees in criminal justice. In addition to those degrees, Technical certificates and certificates of proficiency are available in four areas: law enforcement, community policing, criminal investigation science and wildlife enforcement. These programs provide students with a broad review of the relationships between society and law, including examining the functions, operations, and interrelationships of the various components within the criminal justice system.
