Saint Joseph’s University’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate is designed for students with a college degree who want to start a career in the fast-growing field of sonography. During this program, you'll perform a variety of real-life exams and invasive procedures, from obstetrics and gynecology to vascular and trauma.

This 40-credit certificate program can be completed in less than one year. Once you've completed the program, you'll be eligible to take the** American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) examinations** in sonographic physics, abdomen and obstetrics/gynecology.

The Sonography Programs at Chattanooga State Community College are 12-month certificate programs which begin each fall semester. Full-time student status is required. Both programs are currently accredited by CAAHEP. A class will be accepted each year for fall admission, rotating between the general sonography program offering and the cardiovascular program offering. All courses are taught by Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers, Registered Vascular Technologists, Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Sonologists, Cardiologists, and other qualified personnel for each designated subject.

Applicants must possess a minimum of an AS or AAS degree from an accredited patient-care-related field (providing 2 years of clinical experience) and certification in that same field.* *(Those who have not yet taken their certification exams can still be accepted on a probationary status.)

Upon completion of the general sonography program, the graduate will be eligible to test for certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the specialty categories of Abdominal, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Upon successful completion of the Sonography Physics & Instrumentation exam, in addition to at least one of the specialty exams, the graduate will become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) also awards a sonography credential in general ultrasound.

Diagnostic medical sonography is an exciting imaging modality that is continuously evolving with technological advances. At Montgomery College we strive to provide a comprehensive and thorough education to ready our sonographers of the future for this progressive medical imaging modality. 

Students who plan to major in diagnostic medical sonography will be assigned the temporary major of pre-diagnostic medical sonography, with POS code 530, until they are officially admitted to the diagnostic medical sonography program. Students may take preparatory courses and courses that fulfill general education requirements during the waiting period. As an alternative to being assigned a temporary major, students waiting for admission to the diagnostic medical sonography program may choose to major in general studies or any other open-admission program. The Admissions and Records Office at Takoma Park/Silver Spring will assign a matriculated code once students are admitted to the diagnostic medical sonography program.

HCC's Diagnostic Medical Sonography associate degree career program includes instruction in sonographic practices and principles, and basic to advanced medical imaging skills intended to prepare students for employment as entry-level general and cardiac sonographers and vascular technologists in the field of diagnostic medical ultrasound.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (DMS) play an important role in health care, producing multi-dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs for use by physicians in diagnosing medical conditions. 

Successful graduates are prepared to sit for professional certification exams from national agencies, including the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), and/or the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
