Diagnostic Medical Sonography plays a vital role in helping physicians diagnose and monitor a range of medical conditions, from pregnancy to heart disease and cancer. Sonographers use high frequency sound waves or ultrasound to produce dynamic images of organs, tissues or blood flow in the body. Diagnosis and treatment are often determined from those images. The Sonography Programs at Chattanooga State Community College are 12-month certificate programs which begin each fall semester. Full-time student status is required. Both programs are currently accredited by CAAHEP. A class will be accepted each year for fall admission, rotating between the general sonography program offering and the cardiovascular program offering. All courses are taught by Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers, Registered Vascular Technologists, Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Sonologists, Cardiologists, and other qualified personnel for each designated subject.

Applicants must possess a minimum of an AS or AAS degree from an accredited patient-care-related field (providing 2 years of clinical experience) and certification in that same field.* *(Those who have not yet taken their certification exams can still be accepted on a probationary status.)

Upon completion of the general sonography program, the graduate will be eligible to test for certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the specialty categories of Abdominal, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Upon successful completion of the Sonography Physics & Instrumentation exam, in addition to at least one of the specialty exams, the graduate will become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) also awards a sonography credential in general ultrasound.

Saint Joseph’s University’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate is designed for students with a college degree who want to start a career in the fast-growing field of sonography. During this program, you'll perform a variety of real-life exams and invasive procedures, from obstetrics and gynecology to vascular and trauma.

This 40-credit certificate program can be completed in less than one year. Once you've completed the program, you'll be eligible to take the** American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) examinations** in sonographic physics, abdomen and obstetrics/gynecology.

Guilford Technical Community College offers a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certification program for those interested in a career in diagnostic imaging. The program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to operate ultrasound equipment and perform diagnostic imaging procedures. Upon completion, graduates are prepared to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification exam to become a registered sonographer.

The General Sonography program opened in January 2021 due to the need of Sonographers within the Sovah community. Our program is considered a two-year, full time, hospital based program. Upon completion, graduates will earn an Associates Degree that is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The school is certified to operate as an institution of higher education by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).

The Abdominal Extended Sonography, Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonography, and Vascular Sonography is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (9355 113th St. N, #7709, Seminole, FL 33775; 727.210.2350) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Admission to our program is very competitive, and enrollment is limited, therefore admission to our program is NOT guaranteed. Our students are evaluated on both academic and non-academic predictors of success, and the most qualified applicants will be scheduled for a personal interview with various program representatives. Scores from the application process as well as the interview will be used in the selection of our class. All information is kept strictly confidential and selections will be made in accordance with nondiscriminatory policies.

The Medical Sonography Program at Wake Tech is a 21-month program offering an Associate in Applied Science degree. The program prepares the student for a career as a medical sonographer, a skilled health care professional who uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal structures of the body.

The Medical Sonography degree prepares students to take the national registry examination to become a certified sonographer through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, with the ARRT(S) credential. Certified sonographers provide imaging services under the supervision of a physician who analyzes these images to aid in diagnosis.

Employment opportunities include hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, medical laboratories, government agencies and industry.

The Medical Sonography curriculum includes physics, sectional anatomy, pathology, physiology, patient care, abdominal, vascular, obstetrical/gynecological sonography. Students will be placed at various health care facilities, where they will work with hospital staff. Students will have contact with ill and injured patients. They will complete a limited number of night and weekend rotations.

The program is offered at Wake Tech's Perry Health Sciences Campus, adjacent to WakeMed hospital in Raleigh. The program begins each Fall and Spring semester, and classes are held during daytime hours.
