The need for qualified heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) technicians is never going away. Collin College can teach you what it takes to work in the residential HVAC industry installing and servicing gas and electric furnaces and heat pump systems.

You will learn how to work safely and responsibly within Environmental Protection Agency guidelines and standards that apply to the HVAC industry, and identify and use HVAC equipment, components and tools, while understanding their functions within the industry. You will also learn common mechanical, electrical and electronic components such as compressors, switches, thermostats, motors and fans. You will even be able to practice all of the techniques you learn with heat pumps, heating units, a/c units, refrigeration units and more with hands-on instruction in Collin College facilities.

As the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) trade is growing, and College of Western Idaho's (CWI) HVAC Apprenticeship program is your key to starting a rewarding career in a field increasingly in need of trained and licensed technicians, installers, and trouble shooters.

This four-year program will take your skills from the basics to being prepared to take the journeyman test to become a licensed HVAC technician. HVAC Apprenticeship classes are available in a hyflex format offering in-person and virtual class options with 576 hours of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the job experience.

The Heating and Air Conditioning Certificate Program pro- vides training for beginning HVAC technicians and experienced technicians using the most modern equipment and technology. Hands-on learning is strongly emphasized as well as theoretical classroom study. Practical training with various types of heating and air conditioning systems is provided. Gas and oil boilers and furnaces will be introduced. Controls for warm-air, air condition- ing and many types of hydronic systems are covered. Positions available to those completing the program may include work as an entry level service technician, maintenance technician, sales representative, counter person, HVAC installer, or HVAC contractor. This program would also allow a student to continue to pursue an Associate of Applied Science in the HVAC program at Luzerne County Community College.

The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to install, repair, and maintain commercial and domestic heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Instruction includes theory and application of basic principles involved in the conditioning of air (cooling and heating); filtering and controlling humidity; operating characteristics of various units and parts; blueprint reading; use of technical reference manuals; the diagnosis of malfunctions; overhaul, repair, and adjustment of units and parts such as pumps, compressors, valves, springs and connections; and repair of electric, electronic and pneumatic control systems. The use of books, catalogs, and electronic resources are an important component of instruction.
