This course is a hybrid course, which means students complete part of the course online. Students must be able to obtain access to a computer and reliable internet as well as be disciplined to complete assignments by their deadlines. Students learn to read and understand lab test orders in different medical settings, basic tubes, and chemical compositions, as well as learn to select, assemble, and use applicable equipment. Students learn the importance of safety, identify the most common errors, properly identify patients, confirm requests, and adjust positioning safely. Students learn the appropriate techniques to perform venipunctures, including barriers and implications in site selection. Phlebotomists may gain employment in hospitals, outpatient clinics, doctors’ offices, community clinics, and outpatient labs.
A phlebotomy technician is someone who draws blood from patients. Phlebotomists collect and prepare blood for diagnostic tests, donations, and blood transfusions.
You'll need to obtain a High School Diploma or GED or complete an 8th Grade test. You must be able to pass a criminal background check. You'll also need to provide a copy of your Social Security card and one of your state-issued IDs (e.g., state ID, driver's license, American passport).
