CDL-A classes near me in San Bernardino/Riverside

Introduction

Entering a vocational training program is a significant step in creating a stable and profitable career path. For those in the San Bernardino/Riverside area interested in the field of transportation, taking CDL-A classes can be a great option. This post aims to provide you with a comprehensive guide on how to proceed with this career choice, from understanding what a CDL-A is to finding related job opportunities.

Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A)

What is a CDL-A?

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a driver's license required in the United States to operate any type of vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more. A CDL-A license specifically covers vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. CDL-A is the most comprehensive license, providing holders the opportunity to drive a wide variety of truck and tractor-trailers.

Training Requirements

CDL-A training requirements vary from state to state. However, all future drivers must first obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). The requirements for obtaining a CLP typically include:

  • Being at least 18 years old

  • Having a valid driver's license

  • Passing a vision test

  • Completing a medical examination

  • Passing a general knowledge test

After obtaining a CLP, the aspiring driver must then undergo a training program before they can take the CDL-A test.

What to Look for in a Class

When searching for a CDL-A class, there are several key factors to consider:

  • Accreditation: Ensure the program is accredited by a recognized body. This verifies the quality of the program and its alignment with industry standards.

  • Instructors: Experienced instructors can provide valuable insights into the industry and the day-to-day responsibilities of a truck driver.

  • Hands-on Training: Look for programs that offer ample on-the-road training. This practical experience is critical for building confidence and skills.

What to Expect from the Day-to-Day Class

CDL-A classes typically include both classroom instruction and practical training. The classroom sessions cover the theoretical aspects of truck driving, while the practical sessions provide hands-on experience behind the wheel. Topics covered may include:

  • Vehicle inspection

  • Basic control of the vehicle

  • Shifting gears

  • Maneuvering and backing

  • Safe driving practices

What Does the Certification Process Look Like?

After completion of the training program, the next step is obtaining the CDL-A license. This process includes passing a written test and a skills test, which evaluates your ability to safely operate a truck and trailer. Once you pass these tests, you are awarded your CDL-A license and can start working as a professional truck driver.

How to Find Related Jobs

There are numerous job opportunities for CDL-A license holders. This includes working for shipping companies, retail companies, and even working as a self-employed driver. Online job boards, networking, and direct applications to companies are effective strategies for finding these opportunities.

Other Classes to Take After Becoming a CDL-A

Once you've obtained your CDL-A license, there are additional classes you can take to enhance your skillset and job prospects. These include:

  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Endorsement Training: This enables you to transport hazardous materials.

  • Tanker Endorsement Training: This allows you to haul large volumes of liquid or gaseous loads.

Additional Information on CDL-A

Apart from the basic information, there are other pertinent topics to consider when pursuing a CDL-A license.

Health and Physical Fitness

Driving a large vehicle for long periods can be physically demanding. Therefore, maintaining good health and physical fitness is crucial for CDL-A drivers. Regular medical check-ups are also required to ensure you are physically capable of handling the job.

Rules and Regulations

The truck driving industry is heavily regulated to ensure safety on the roads. As a CDL-A driver, you must be aware and compliant with these regulations, which include rules on driving hours, vehicle maintenance, and record keeping, among others.
