A CDL-A, or a Commercial Driver's License Class A, is a license that allows drivers to operate any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the vehicle being towed is heavier than 10,000 pounds. With a CDL-A, you can drive an array of large vehicles, including tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations, flatbeds, livestock carriers, and more.
Before you can get a CDL-A, there are certain requirements you must meet:
You must be at least 18 years old to drive within state lines and at least 21 years old to drive across state or national borders.
You must have a clean driving record.
You must pass a physical examination every two years.
You must pass a written test on rules and regulations.
When choosing a CDL-A class, there are several factors to consider:
Accreditation: The school should be accredited by a recognized accrediting body.
Quality of instructors: The instructors should be experienced, knowledgeable, and supportive.
Class size: Smaller class sizes allow for more personalized attention.
Job placement assistance: Some schools offer job placement assistance after graduation.
The day-to-day class structure varies from one institution to another. However, most CDL-A classes include:
Classroom instruction: This covers all the theoretical aspects of CDL-A, including safety rules, vehicle operation, and transportation regulations.
Hands-on training: This involves actual driving practice, where you learn how to operate, park, and turn a large vehicle, among other things.
Obtaining a CDL-A involves a few steps:
Apply for a CDL-A permit: This involves passing a written test on rules and regulations.
Enroll in a CDL-A training program: This is where you learn everything you need to know to pass the CDL-A exams.
Pass the CDL-A exams: This consists of a written test and a skills test that includes a pre-trip inspection, a basic controls test, and a road test.
With a CDL-A, you can find jobs in a variety of fields, such as transportation, construction, and logistics. Some possible job titles include Over-the-Road (OTR) driver, company driver, owner-operator, and team driver. However, finding a job requires more than just having a CDL-A. You also need to have good driving skills, be physically fit, and have a good understanding of the industry.
Once you have your CDL-A, there are other classes you can take to enhance your skills and increase your job prospects. Some of these include:
Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Endorsement Course: This allows you to transport hazardous materials.
Tank Vehicle Endorsement Course: This permits the transportation of liquids in bulk.
School Bus Endorsement Course: This certifies you to drive a school bus.
Driving a CDL-A vehicle poses certain health and safety risks. Therefore, it is important to understand these risks and how to mitigate them. This includes understanding how to handle hazardous materials and how to maintain good health and fitness for driving.
Understanding the transportation industry as a whole is crucial for any CDL-A driver. This can include understanding logistics, supply chain management, and the economic impact of the transportation industry.
There are many ways to progress in a career as a CDL-A driver. This can include becoming an owner-operator, moving into a management role, or specializing in a specific type of transport.
Continuing education is crucial for maintaining your CDL-A and staying up-to-date with changes in regulations and industry practices.
Becoming a CDL-A driver can be a rewarding career choice, offering opportunities for travel and the potential for good earnings. With the right training and a commitment to continuous learning, you can succeed in this industry.
