CDL-A Classes Near Me in Denver

Introduction

If you're reading this, chances are you're interested in becoming a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holder, specifically CDL-A, in Denver, Colorado. This guide will provide you with detailed information about what CDL-A is, the training requirements, what to look for in a class, and what you can expect from a day-to-day class. We will also discuss the certification process, how to find related jobs, and what other classes you can take after becoming a CDL-A holder.

Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A)

What is a CDL-A?

A CDL-A is a type of commercial driver's license that allows you to operate large, heavy, or placarded hazardous material vehicles. These vehicles typically include tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations, tank vehicles, livestock carriers, and flatbeds.

Training Requirements

  • Age Requirements: You should be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving (within Colorado) and 21 years old for interstate driving (across state lines or transporting hazardous materials).

  • Physical Requirements: You need to meet certain physical requirements, including passing a Department of Transportation physical examination.

  • Driving Record: You should have a clean driving record.

  • Training: Before applying for the CDL, you must complete a driver training course from a state-approved training school.

What to Look for in a Class

When choosing a CDL-A class, consider the following:

  • Class Size: Smaller classes often mean more individualized attention.

  • Training Duration: The length of the program can vary, but it typically ranges from a few weeks to a few months.

  • Hands-On Training: Look for programs that offer ample time for hands-on driving experience.

  • Course Curriculum: The program should cover everything you need to know to pass the CDL-A examination, including driving safety, vehicle maintenance, and proper handling of hazardous materials.

What to Expect From the Day-to-Day Class

A typical day in a CDL-A class involves both classroom instruction and hands-on driving practice. Classroom sessions cover theoretical aspects of commercial driving, including road laws, safety protocols, and vehicle maintenance.

In driving sessions, you can expect to learn how to operate a large commercial vehicle, practice maneuvers, and receive instruction on how to handle various road and weather conditions.

What Does the Certification Process Look Like?

The certification process for a CDL-A typically involves the following steps:

  1. Completion of Training: Complete a CDL training program from a state-approved school.

  2. Passing the Written Test: Pass the CDL general knowledge test, which covers topics like driving safety, transporting cargo, and air brakes.

  3. Passing the Skills Test: Pass the skills test, which includes a pre-trip vehicle inspection, a basic vehicle control test, and an on-road driving test.

How to Find Related Jobs

After obtaining your CDL-A, you can look for jobs in various sectors, including transportation, construction, and logistics. Networking with classmates and instructors can often lead to job opportunities. Online job boards, company websites, and job fairs are other excellent resources.

What Other Classes Can Someone Take After Becoming a CDL-A?

After obtaining a CDL-A, you might consider taking additional classes to expand your skill set. For instance, a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement allows you to transport hazardous materials, while a Passenger (P) endorsement allows you to drive passenger vehicles.

Additional training in areas like vehicle maintenance or logistics management could also broaden your employment prospects.

Further Career Options

Beyond driving, CDL-A holders might consider advancing their careers in the following ways:

  • Transportation Supervisor: Oversee the operations of a transportation department, including scheduling, route planning, and driver management.

  • Dispatch Manager: Manage the dispatch operations for a transportation company, which could include assigning routes, coordinating schedules, and troubleshooting problems as they arise.

  • Safety Manager: Ensure that a company's drivers and vehicles are operating safely and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Owner-Operator: Use your CDL-A to start your own trucking business.
