The Medical Sonography Program at Wake Tech is a 21-month program offering an Associate in Applied Science degree. The program prepares the student for a career as a medical sonographer, a skilled health care professional who uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal structures of the body.
The Medical Sonography degree prepares students to take the national registry examination to become a certified sonographer through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, with the ARRT(S) credential. Certified sonographers provide imaging services under the supervision of a physician who analyzes these images to aid in diagnosis.
Employment opportunities include hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, medical laboratories, government agencies and industry.
The Medical Sonography curriculum includes physics, sectional anatomy, pathology, physiology, patient care, abdominal, vascular, obstetrical/gynecological sonography. Students will be placed at various health care facilities, where they will work with hospital staff. Students will have contact with ill and injured patients. They will complete a limited number of night and weekend rotations.
The program is offered at Wake Tech's Perry Health Sciences Campus, adjacent to WakeMed hospital in Raleigh. The program begins each Fall and Spring semester, and classes are held during daytime hours.

The Phlebotomy curriculum prepares individuals to obtain blood and other specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis.
Course work includes proper specimen collection and handling, communication skills, and maintaining patient data. Graduates may be eligible to take the examination given by Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Graduates may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, and other health care settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians.
The Phlebotomy program is a one semester program offered each Fall and Spring semester.
The Dental Assisting Program at Wake Technical Community College is accredited by the American Dental Association and therefore a graduate is classified as a DA II by the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners. The student is eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board Exam in order to be classified as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). As a Dental Assistant II (DAII), defined by the Dental Laws of North Carolina, graduates can perform identified expanded functions including coronal polishing.
Course work includes instruction in general studies, biomedical sciences, dental sciences, clinical sciences and clinical practice. A combination of lecture, laboratory or pre-clinical, and clinical experiences provide the students with knowledge in infection/hazard control, radiography, dental materials, preventive dentistry and clinical procedures. The students receive their hands-on patient care clinical experience with rotations at the Adams UNC School of Dentistry, East Carolina School of Dental Medicine, the Wake County Human Services Dental Clinic, Wake Smiles, Wake Tech's Dental Hygiene Department and private general and specialty dental practices in Wake and surrounding counties.
The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures.
Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections and computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography and supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.
Wake Tech's Medical Assisting Diploma program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).
The MAERB evaluates medical assisting programs according to standards adopted by the American Association of Medical Assistants, the American Medical Association and CAAHEP. The MAERB then recommends programs to CAAHEP for accreditation.
Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited medical assisting diploma programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Certification Examination, the CMA exam, to become Certified Medical Assistants. Employment opportunities include physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments and outpatient clinics.
Medical Office Administration has a new concentration in Medical Billing and Coding (AAS degree). Students develop skills in medical coding and auditing, along with medical terminology, keyboarding, editing and formatting, office software applications, office computations, medical office procedures, medical insurance and billing, medical legal and ethical issues, electronic health records, oral and written communication, critical thinking, team building; and problem solving. The degree is available online. Graduates should qualify for employment opportunities in medical offices; healthcare facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers; insurance billing offices; and laboratories. Students are eligible to take industry-recognized certification exams.
The graduate of the Practical Nursing (PN) program at Wake Technical Community College is prepared to practice as an entry-level nurse. Graduates of this program meet the education requirements to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN). The practice of practical nursing is directed toward meeting the health care needs of individuals throughout their lifespan. The PN role is characterized by evidence-based clinical practice with the provision of care for individuals and groups of individuals in structured settings.
The role of the PN is a dependent role under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and other health care providers approved by North Carolina law. In accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing Administrative Code, 21 NCAC 36.0225, Components of Nursing Practice for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the LPN accepts assignments that can be safely performed and participate in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the client’s response to health care interventions. The PN graduate demonstrates the competencies identified by the National League of Nursing (2010) and the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine [NAM]), (2003), to provide nursing care. The practical nurse graduate is prepared to be a responsible life-long learner.
This certificate is designed to prepare students for the CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) examination. Topics include network topologies and design, router configuration and protocols, switching theory, virtual LANS and threaded case studies.
Upon completion of the four-course sequence, students will have the expertise they need to pass the test required to achieve CCNA status. Completion of NET 110 or CTI-120 or its equivalent is required to begin this program.
The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs that impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential. The Cybersecurity degree prepares students for an IT career in digital forensics, network security services, and ethical hacking. Courses include routing and switching, network vulnerabilities, secure communications, system and security administration, data recovery, and computer investigations. Students will work in Microsoft, Linux, and Apple desktop and server operating system environments. Upon completion, students will be prepared for a variety of industry certifications, including: Certified Ethical Hacker, Certified Enterprise Defender, CCNA Security and Security+.
