The Medical Assistant Program provides you with the knowledge and skills to perform the duties of a medical assistant and prepares you to complete a national certification exam. Medical assistants work primarily in doctors’ offices and other care clinics as a key member of the allied healthcare team. You receive training in both the administrative and clinical areas of medical assistance so you can work to keep the offices and clinics of numerous health professionals running smoothly under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties you may perform include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties you may perform include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed. Our curriculum helps students gain competency in cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies.
The ESL Program at Salt Lake Technical College offers five levels of ESL instruction leading to SLTC certificate programs or SLCC degree programs. The Versant English Placement Test is given to determine the level at which a student should begin. Testing is arranged at the time students start to register for the program. Students can take ESL classes in reading/writing, listening/speaking, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation. The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Salt Lake Technical College is to empower students by improving their English language proficiency, equipping them with the essential skills to pursue technical education, enroll in academic programs, and integrate into the workforce.
This program is designed to prepare students for future employment in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration (HVACR) industry. The program consists of required core training courses and elective courses designed to allow students to determine which area of the HVACR industry they would like to specialize in.
Throughout training, students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate, thereby certifying, their skills by participating in nationally recognized tests which provide “Employment Ready” certifications. "Employment Ready" certifications confirm the student's grasp of the critical skills needed for entry level technicians in the HVACR industry.
Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is the first step in becoming successful in any healthcare field. This program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the State of Utah Nursing Assistant certification requirements. Students will learn the duties and responsibilities of a certified nursing assistant to provide for the physical, physiological, and psychological needs of the patient within a hospital or long-term care facility. The curriculum includes an overall introduction to human relations, anatomy, physiology, and bacteriology, as well as consideration of body mechanics, disease processes, and therapeutic approaches. Skills learned include (but are not limited to) communication, infection prevention, universal precautions, positioning, and ambulation, monitoring vital signs, hygiene/grooming, feeding, toileting, and bathing.
This PC based program prepares students to work in the outpatient medical coding areas of hospitals, larger medical clinics, and doctors’ offices. It provides basic clerical training in computer basics, Internet, keyboarding/skill building, word processing, medical terminology, insurance billing, medical accounting/patient scheduling software, outpatient coding, and spreadsheets. Emphasis is placed on customer service and life skills.
Classes are in person, offered in 9 or 12 week consecutive blocks of time. Once the program is started, students are expected to move through consecutive blocks with program completion in a maximum of 9 months. Students may complete the externship course more quickly as their schedule and pharmacy location may allow.
This intensive program is designed to prepare students for an entry-level truck driving position as a Class “A” CDL driver. The program has two courses with units of study that cover basic and advanced operating practices, defensive driving, inspections, life skills and essential activities such as trip planning, map reading, hours of service, cargo handling and an employment workshop.
