The Academy of Law & Public Safety (ALPS) is designed to provide a unique and comprehensive foundation of knowledge, skills and professional ethics for Ocean County students interested in pursuing careers in law and public safety. The academy offers a rigorous educational program while integrating the latest technology related to criminal justice. Students have the opportunity to earn over 24 college credits through our Ocean County College embedded, dual-enrollment courses. Graduates can earn credentials to include Emergency Medical Dispatch, Basic Telecommunicator, CPR and Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I Certification. ALPS graduates have been hired and/or are currently employed with over 30 New Jersey Police Departments, NJ Departments of Correction, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, and many have served in the U.S. military.

Automotive Technology

The OCVTS Twilight Automotive Technology program introduces students to major concepts and theories of maintenance, service and repairs on modern automobiles. Students are instructed on shop safety and proper usage of tools and equipment. Upon successful completion, students are prepared for entry-level employment in the automotive field and will have acquired the knowledge necessary to take ASE certification tests. This program is evaluated and accredited by NATEF. (National Automobile Technician Educational Foundation). The following subjects are NATEF accredited: Engine Repair, Engine Performance, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Brakes, Steering and Suspension, Heating and Air-Conditioning, Automatic Transmissions, and Manual Transmission and Drive-Axle.

Dental Assisting

This program teaches four-handed dentistry and lab skills, prevention techniques, operative treatment, and specialty areas. A clinical experience in a dental office is a required part of the program. Students must provide transportation to the clinical site. The course provides preparation for students interested in dental careers such as dental hygienist, lab technician, x-ray technician, and dentist, as well as for those interested in employment as a dental assistant. Additional certification allows students to become certified or registered assistants licensed to perform oral procedures under the supervision of a dentist. Second year students can take the infection control board exam through the dental assisting national board to initiate the certified dental assistant credential. Upon completion of the dental assisting program students have the option to attend a dental radiology program. Students must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED to be presented at time of registration, and completed the dental assisting program. Students are required to attend 45 hours of class time –25 hours didactic and 20 hours lab, and complete/pass all New Jersey Radiological Technology Board of Examiners lab objectives. In addition, students will attend clinical practice as arranged by OCVTS and complete all New Jersey Radiological Technology Board of Examiners clinical objectives. Upon successful completion of the radiology program, the student is then eligible to take the Dental X-ray Examination for licensure. Recommended Skills: Word processing and strong communication skills are recommended.

Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Program provides instruction in the skills required to take the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. The skills taught relate to the major areas of instruction including hair, skin, nail services and barbering, as well as business management and ownership. Curriculum content will cover: sterilization and sanitation procedures; techniques to cut, shape, set, style, color and highlight hair, permanent wave and chemical relaxing techniques, temporary hair removal, waxing, shaving for men, makeup application, facials, manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements, salon receptionist functions, maintenance of individual client records, care and styling of wigs, thermal pressing and curling. Students also participate in clinical experiences on site, which provide hands on training in Cosmetology services. Consistent attendance is crucial for completion of the 1000-hour requirement, as dictated by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology. Please be aware that in order to sit for the state licensing exam all students must have a valid social security number or tax number ID number, a valid government issued photo ID and a secondary proof of identification (does not need to be a photo ID), and a high school diploma; a home educated diploma will not be recognized for licensure. Home-educated students must obtain their High School Equivalency Diploma to apply for their New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology license.
