Northern’s construction management program equips students to be skilled in coordinating all phases of building construction, including estimating, scheduling, preconstruction, interpreting scopes of work as well as writing contracts, purchasing materials, and working with subcontractors and vendors to ensure project success. Academic and real-world opportunities are provided that are intended to enhance the student learning experience.
Pursuing a career in cosmetology offers individuals the opportunity to unleash their creativity, passion for beauty, and talent for enhancing people's confidence by providing professional hair, makeup, and skincare services. In the cosmetology program, you will learn the art, science, and business of the beauty industry. Students who complete the program can choose to work in a specific area of the cosmetology field or advance their training to become a Cosmetology instructor. Students in the cosmetology program will receive a combination of classroom and laboratory work, with opportunities to practice their skills on mannequins and actual customers in the campus salon/studio. Students will learn hair shaping, hair coloring, chemical texturizing, design, and artistic principles. Additional subjects include: artificial nails, bacteriology, decontamination, infection control, manicures, and pedicures as prescribed by the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology Laws and Rules.
Pursuing a career in Cannabis Operations & Plant-Based Wellness offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of a burgeoning industry that is revolutionizing healthcare and wellness. Cannabis Operations is designed to provide students with extensive knowledge of cannabis fundamentals, as well as its uses and effects. You'll gain an understanding of cannabis regulations and advanced dispensary retail while learning to lawfully instruct others about cannabis and related product use. Plant-Based Wellness focuses on best practices for customer service, legally compliant communication, and historical elements of integrating plants into wellness. Additionally, you'll become confident in regulatory compliance and remaining compliant in retail and frontline settings.
NMHTS CNA Course is licensed by the State of Michigan to meet all state and federal Nurse Aide Training Program (NATP) requirements. Upon successful completion, graduates of NMHTS are then eligible to sit for their state exam to receive certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). All persons holding certification are tracked in Michigan's Nurse Aide Registry.
The electrical line technician (ELT) program is offered through a partnership of NMU and the Lake Superior Community Partnership (LSCP). Students will attend lectures at NMU's Jacobetti Complex and fieldwork at the MSDC training site on the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Gwinn, Michigan. Students will receive introductory elevated outdoor work-site field experiences related to electrical power transmission and work-site field experiences related to electrical power transmission and distribution systems, including climbing, pole setting and framing, guying and bucket and digger truck operation. Students will also learn the principles of electricity and the fundamentals of current flow in series, parallel and compound circuits as well as the general safety rules used in the electrical power industry. Applications of safety policies, personal responsibility, accident reporting procedures, and the safe use of various tools will be covered. Each student has the opportunity to train for and receive their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL A) while in the line tech program.
