Emergency Training Solutions
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Office of EMS prescribes a number of pre-requisites from all students seeking initial EMT certification. Students may register in advance of completing these requirements so long as they are completed before the first class meeting. The following pre-requisites must be met prior to the start date of the program: The student must be 16 years of age or older. The student must be able to perform physical tasks as outlined in the Virginia Office of EMS functional position description. Must provide proof of a current flu vaccination. Virginia Office of EMS Policy TR-35 fully details the requirements for entry into an initial EMS certification program. The following is a co-requisite which must be met by the established deadline in the course outline: The student must hold or obtain an AHA HeartCode BLS or Red Cross BLS certification. The certification may not expire prior to the end date of the course.

This program will give you the skills necessary to function as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). EMTs traditionally provide emergency medical care with local ambulance companies or college EMS units. An EMT can function as a volunteer or choose EMS as a career. Upon successful completion of our EMT Training Program, you will be eligible to complete the National certification exams to become a Nationally Registered (NREMT) and PA certified EMT.
The EMT program provides comprehensive training for individuals looking to enter the field of emergency medical services. The curriculum includes both classroom instruction and practical skills training to ensure students are well-prepared for the challenges they will face in the field.

Accelerated, Hybrid EMT Program Structure Location Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad 828 McIntire Road Charlottesville, VA 22902. Asynchronous learning Students will read 4-5 chapters per week and complete corresponding assignments online using the MyBradyLab learning management system (LMS). Additional course readings and materials will be made available on Platinum Planner for students to access throughout the program. Quizzes and exams (except for the final) are taken online each weekend following synchronous lab sessions. Students should expect to put in approximately 7-10 hours per week on readings and assignments for greatest success. Synchronous learning Students will convene weekly on Saturday afternoon for lab sessions from 1pm to 4pm. Each lab will correspond to material being studied asynchronously and reinforce material presented in the book and LMS. Students will work through cases and scenarios to learn and demonstrate patient care techniques. We generally cap classes at 12 students to maintain a 1:6 instructor-to-student ratio. Clinical rotations Students will be required to complete clinical rotations with a healthcare agency with at least one rotation being completed with an EMS agency. Students must complete 10 hours and obtain 10 patient contacts throughout the program. ETS partners with the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad and the UVA Emergency Department to offer this experience to students. Clinical observations allow students to connect learning outcomes to patient care in the field.
This hybrid boot-camp course will offer in-person skills sessions February 21, 2025 from 6:00 to 10:00pm and February 22 and 23, 2025, from 8:30a to 5:30p. All other 'book' and at home skills work is done independently plus watching and demonstrating several skills videos when it is convenient for you, but concluding at least 1-2 weeks prior to the in-person skills sessions.
All of our EMT courses are hybrid in format. Students complete all "book work" independently prior to attending in-class skills sessions. This format works extremely well for students who do not have the 150+ hours to attend a traditional EMT course, providing you are able to learn material on your own by reading the textbook, or listening to an audiobook with PowerPoint slides. Interactive lectures are also available. We offer skills sessions in a variety of formats including a week-long "boot camp" course, weekend sessions, and a new format of 2 1/2 to 3 days. Choose the format that works best for you. In-class skills sessions that occur within 6 weeks of the start date are accelerated and should only be completed by highly motivated individuals who have ample time to complete the coursework. It is estimated it takes 100-120 hours to complete the "book work" and another 24-30 hours of "at-home" skills work, which must be completed prior to attending in-class skills sessions.
The accelerated, hybrid EMT course is designed to prepare the student for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), as defined and recognized by the VA Office of EMS and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. The course content includes the knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at the basic life support level with an emergency service. Following successful completion of the course, students will register for the National Registry Certification Exam which must be completed to become both a Virginia and Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician. Many of our students become volunteer and career EMTs while others work as ED Technicians in various hospital systems. Our program does not qualify students for academic credit and is not directly affiliated with any EMS agency. We do partner closely with the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad and UVAHealth for clinical placements.
