We currently provide up-to-date training for medical students in all of the following skills:
Not only can approved CPR techniques change over time, if a healthcare provider doesn’t use CPR in his/her everyday work, those skills can easily become rusty—and the same goes for medical students. As a construction worker you know that your job is physically demanding often requiring demolition, uploading materials, and transporting heavy materials. These tasks make it even more likely for a medical emergency to happen to fellow worker or bystander. Astonishingly, in 2019 OSHA even reported that the construction industry has 5,333 fatalities, which accounts for 20 percent of all worker deaths. Unfortunately, most of these fatalities were due to falls, high voltage electrical wiring issues, scaffolding, and a lack of proper training. It is critical to equip your employees with the proper training to be able to assist a coworker before emergency response arrives. Having the ability to respond promptly can double or triple the chances of survival of cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association. Having the confidence to administer CPR and First Aid can drastically increase the chance of survival in a medical emergency. CPR of America has provided Massachusetts with high quality CPR and First Aid classes for over 7 years. In our First Aid and CPR course we start with the fundamentals of CPR; high quality chest compressions at the rate of 100-120 compressions per minute and a depth of 2-2.4 inches on an adult. Our Preston professional Manikins with built in rate monitors give real time corrective feedback to students if they are going to fast on the compressions, too slow, or need to compress deeper. Next, we discuss the importance of providing rescue breaths to refurnish the heart with oxygen. Effective breathing can include providing mouth to mouth breaths or providing breaths with a pocket mask, which is a barrier device that provides oxygen to a victim through a one-way valve. Furthermore, the next topic that is covered is the AED or Automatic External Defibrillator. This device is used to provide a shock with victim with ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, which are arrhythmia rhythms. For the First Aid portion students will learn how to identify life threatening allergic reactions and address then by using an EpiPen. By using an EpiPen students will have the ability to deliver a lifesaving prescription that will open the victim’s airway. Other topics that will be discussed us the use of bandaging with a sterile cloth, or in some severe causes using a tourniquet. The First Aid portion addresses how to recognize a stroke, responding to an airway obstruction, and legal implications of preforming First Aid or CPR on a victim.
