The Course prepares the graduate for entry level positions in the medical field as Medical Assistants, front and back office and other closely related direct care roles such as hospices, home health service and restorative care. Throughout the course, the participants receive instruction in a wide variety of medical procedures through lecture, laboratory demonstration, and hands-on experience. Medical Assistant Students are trained to perform basic medical procedures including taking vital signs, perform injections and venipuncture, perform routine laboratory work, ECG configuration and CPR. The Students will also receive training as receptionists in a medical environment, medical records (Medisoft) and customer service/communications skills, nutrition, cultural awareness, infection control, dementia and hospice care as well as terminology and ethical issues of the medical field. Great emphasis is placed on safety procedures protecting both the technician the patient. Students will also be trained to properly record and handle patient information, prepare patient files for billing and collections, and more. Graduates will be able to work in doctors offices, hospitals, labs, outpatient clinics, chiropractic officers, acupuncture offices, physical therapy clinics, hospice care, assisted living communities, and in a one-on-one home care setting. The units listed below are each 24 clock hours in length. This, along with the required outside preparation, represents .80 semester credits for each unit.
The Nurse Assistant, graduate will be able to perform tasks such as basic care and help patients with activities of daily living, transport patients, clean treatments, clean, and bathe patients, help patients use the toilet and dress, turn reposition, transfer patients between beds and wheelchairs, listen to and record patients health concerns and report that information to nurses, measure patients vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature, serve meals and help patients eat, help patient’s to move around the facility, such as pushing their wheelchairs, clean equipment and facilities, change linens, maintain proper hygiene, ensuring the patient/resident take their medication and stock supplies.
The Nurse Assistant prepares the graduate for certification and an entry level positions in the medical field asa Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA). CNAs serve a critical role in hospices, assisted living facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and home health services. Nurse Assistant students participate in clinical training in real medical facilities, and encounter and work with real patients, under the supervision of the instructor. A successful graduate of the training program is qualified to take the Nurse Assistant certification examination, which will qualify them for certification as a Certified Nurse Assistant –CNA.
The Home Healthcare Vocational Aide, Certified program’s mission is to provide post-secondary educational vocational training to individuals who wish to become gainfully employed in the field of home health care. The graduate will be able to perform tasks such as changing occupied and unoccupied beds, homemaking services, elder care, infection control, bathing, female/male perineal care, routine oral hygiene, denture care, applying a transfer or gait belt, positioning bedridden clients, wheelchair transfers, dressing/undressing clients, range of motion exercises, assisting clients with the use of mobility aids (e.g. crutches, walkers, and canes), using bed pans/portable commodes, and taking and recording vital signs. An ATC Home Health Care Vocational Aide student will also acquire skills that will assist them in performing a variety of duties that may be assigned to them, under the supervision of a doctor or nurse, including measuring blood pressure or pulse, measuring weight and height, caring for a patient with a urinary catheter, and assisting with finger stick blood sugar tests. The graduates will also be educated in how to work with clients who are terminally ill, or suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s

The Associated Technical College Phlebotomy Training Program is for students seeking a certification as a “Certified Phlebotomy Technician I,” which is designed and coordinated to both teach them the technical knowledge, as well as various procedural elements of basic and advanced phlebotomy. This includes both the collection of blood specimens and venipuncture; these are part of the necessary requirements to become a Phlebotomy Technician. The Phlebotomy Training Program at ATC includes a combination of classroom theory and hands-on instruction using our own in-house Laboratory environment, followed by an externship providing practical experience in a Laboratory Clinical Setting. Graduates who meet all graduation requirements, will be eligible to take the National Health career Association exam. They will also receive a license awarded by the California Department Public Health once submission of required documentation and successfully pass the NHA exam and meet all the requirements.
Our program will instruct our students on many topics including: An Introduction to Phlebotomy & Infection Control, Legal Issues in the Healthcare arena, an Introduction to Human Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology usage, typical Phlebotomy Equipment and Supplies, various Phlebotomy Clinical Skills/Procedures, and lastly, the Fundamental Essentials of Phlebotomy. This Phlebotomy program is developed for students who want to not only become employed or enhance their careers, but also those interested in entering a new field or beginning a career in the medical field to become a Phlebotomy Technician. This is a fully developed, comprehensive, 60- hour program of Didactic Instruction (basic and advanced Phlebotomy) at ATC, along with 40-hours minimum in an external Laboratory/Clinical Setting.
