What is a CDL-A?

A CDL-A, or Commercial Driver's License Class A, is the highest level of commercial driver's license in the United States. This license allows individuals to operate a combination of vehicles, such as a tractor-trailer or a semi-truck with a trailer, with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. The CDL-A license is essential for those seeking to work as long-haul or over-the-road truck drivers, as it enables them to transport a wide range of goods and materials across the country.

Training Requirements

To obtain a CDL-A license, individuals must complete a comprehensive training program that covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of operating a commercial vehicle. This typically includes classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, and passing both written and skills-based exams. The specific training requirements may vary depending on the state and the training provider, but most programs will ensure that students are thoroughly prepared to safely and effectively operate a commercial vehicle.
