Health Information Technologists and Managers are professionals that assist in the support of patient care teams by mastering medical billing, coding, health information management systems, and records management processes. Health Information Techs typically work in doctor’s offices, hospitals, specialized healthcare facilities, or health insurance companies.

Students will take part in a 144-hour internship that involves real-world experience through work-site, remote position, or project-based study.

The Associate in Science (A.S.) in Health Information Technology degree improves the health care delivery system through educating and training students to become knowledgeable about the management of health information systems. Health care is the largest industry in the U.S. and there is enormous demand for skilled health information technology professionals to design, operate and maintain the technology that makes the health care system run. They ensure a patient’s health information and records are complete, accurate, and protected. HIM professionals also work on the classification of diseases and treatments to ensure they are standardized for clinical, billing, and legal uses in healthcare. 

Health Information Technicians analyze, secure, and maintain patient health information. Other duties include coding diagnoses, processing reimbursements, managing release of information, and protecting patient data privacy. Upon successfully completing RCTC’s online Health Information Technology (HIT) program, you are eligible to take the national exam sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and earn the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential.
