Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A)

What is a CDL-A?

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A is a professional driver's license that allows the holder to operate large, heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. With CDL-A, you can drive tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations, tank vehicles, livestock carriers, and flatbeds across state lines.

Training Requirements

To obtain a CDL-A license, certain training requirements must be met:

  • Basic Knowledge: You must have a good understanding of road rules, safety regulations, and truck mechanics.

  • Skills Training: This involves learning how to operate the vehicle, including turning, parking, backing up, and vehicle inspections.

  • On-Road Training: This consists of actual driving experience under the supervision of a certified instructor.

What to Look for in a Class

Choosing the right CDL-A class is crucial for your success. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Curriculum: Look for a program that covers all necessary areas, including driving techniques, safety regulations, and vehicle maintenance.

  • Instructors: Ensure the instructors are experienced and certified.

  • Facilities and Equipment: The school should have modern, well-maintained trucks and simulators for training.

  • Location: The proximity of the school to your home or workplace can have a significant impact on your learning experience.

What to Expect from the Day-to-Day Class

During your CDL-A training, you can expect a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Topics covered may include vehicle inspection, defensive driving, map reading, accident procedures, and cargo handling.

What Does the Certification Process Look Like?

The certification process involves passing both a written knowledge test and a skills test. The skills test includes three parts: a pre-trip vehicle inspection, a basic controls test, and a road test.

How to Find a Related Job

Once you've obtained your CDL-A, you can start looking for jobs in the trucking industry. Some resources for finding jobs include online job boards, networking events, and trucking company websites.
