Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A)

What is a CDL-A?

The Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A is a professional driver’s license that allows you to operate combination vehicles such as tractor-trailers. This license opens up a world of opportunities for high-demand careers in the transportation industry. To obtain a CDL-A, aspiring drivers must first go through a comprehensive training program.

Training Requirements

To be eligible for CDL-A training, candidates must meet certain requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years old to drive interstate and at least 18 years old for intrastate driving.

  • Candidates need to possess a valid driver's license.

  • Candidates must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam to show they are physically fit to handle the demands of driving a commercial vehicle.

What to Look for in a Class

When looking for a CDL-A class, there are several key factors to consider:

  • Course Curriculum: Look for a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of driving a commercial vehicle, including vehicle operation, safety procedures, and legal regulations.

  • Hands-on Training: Practical, hands-on training is crucial in learning how to operate a large vehicle safely. Look for classes that offer ample behind-the-wheel training.

  • Qualified Instructors: Ensure your instructors are experienced professionals with extensive knowledge of the industry.

What to Expect from the Day-to-Day Class

Day-to-day classes for CDL-A training are a blend of theoretical instruction and practical training.

  • On the theoretical side, expect to learn about vehicle components, driving laws, safety procedures, and logbook maintenance.

  • On the practical side, you'll get behind the wheel to practice vehicle inspection, maneuvering, and driving on public roads.

What Does the Certification Process Look Like?

The CDL-A certification process involves passing a written knowledge test and a practical skills test. The knowledge test covers topics like traffic laws, safe driving techniques, and cargo handling. The skills test includes a pre-trip vehicle inspection, a basic control skills test, and an on-road driving test.

How to Find Related Jobs

Once you've obtained your CDL-A license, finding related jobs becomes easier. Many transport companies are constantly looking for qualified drivers. You can also check job portals, local classifieds, and websites of logistic companies for job listings.

What Other Classes Someone Can Take After Becoming a CDL-A

After obtaining a CDL-A, you may wish to enhance your skills by taking additional classes. Options include:

  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Endorsement Class: This allows you to transport hazardous materials.

  • Tanker Endorsement Class: This permits the transportation of liquid cargo.

  • School Bus/Passenger Endorsement Class: This qualifies you to drive school buses or passenger vehicles.

Additional Job Opportunities

With a CDL-A, there are also opportunities outside of truck driving.

  • Bus Driver: With additional training, CDL-A license holders can become bus drivers.

  • Heavy Equipment Operator: The experience of operating large vehicles can transfer to operating construction or farm equipment.

Vocational Training

Vocational training is an excellent way to learn new skills and increase employability. In addition to CDL-A, there are many other programs available in Texas. For example, you could consider becoming a pharmacy technician, medical office specialist or a HVAC technician.
