If you're in Houston and considering this career path, you might be asking, ""Where can I find CDL-A classes near me?"" This blog post will guide you through everything you need to know about obtaining your Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A) in Houston, Texas.

Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A)

What is a CDL-A?

A CDL-A is a type of commercial driver's license required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed vehicle is heavier than 10,000 pounds. With this license, you're eligible to drive tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations, tank vehicles, livestock carriers, and flatbeds.

Training Requirements

Before you can obtain a CDL-A, you need to meet certain training requirements. These include:

  • Completing a CDL training program: This program provides you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate a commercial vehicle safely.

  • Passing written and practical exams: These exams test your understanding of the rules and regulations associated with operating a commercial vehicle, as well as your ability to drive one safely.

Dreambound is an excellent platform to find vocational training programs for CDL-A. It provides a comprehensive list of schools and programs that offer CDL training, allowing you to compare and choose the one that best suits your needs.

  • Course content: The course should cover all necessary theoretical and practical components of CDL training, including vehicle operation, safety procedures, and regulations.

  • Quality of instructors: Experienced, knowledgeable instructors can make a significant difference in your learning experience.

  • Class size: Smaller class sizes can provide more individualized attention and support.

What to Expect from the Day-to-Day Class

Attending a CDL-A class is a commitment, and knowing what to expect can help you prepare. Most classes include both in-classroom theory lessons and on-the-road practical training. You'll learn about traffic laws, vehicle maintenance, safety procedures, and log keeping. The practical training will give you hands-on experience driving a commercial vehicle under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

What Does the Certification Process Look Like?

Obtaining your CDL-A involves a multi-step process:

  • Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP): After completing your training program, you must pass a written test to obtain your CLP.

  • Gain experience: With your CLP, you can practice driving on public roads under the supervision of a CDL holder.

  • Pass the CDL skills test: This test includes a vehicle inspection, basic controls test, and a road test.
