The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA/GNA) program prepares students to work in nursing and residential care facilities and in hospitals. What do nursing assistants do? Nursing assistants provide basic care and help patients with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, transferring and ambulating). The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA/GNA) program is a 125-Hour program intended to be completed within 5 – 6 weeks. Please note that students will be required to complete 40 hours hands-on clinical externship as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing. The clinical externship will take place within a nursing home or long-term care facility. On clinical externship, students will provide hands-on patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse clinical instructor. The clinical externship gives the student a chance to experience and participate in the day-to-day activities of a being a Certified Nursing Assistant in a long-term facility care. It also gives an opportunity for students to realize if practicing as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) is a good fit for their future employment. Successful completion of the clinical externship is a graduation requirement.
