The Sterile Processing Technician program offered by Adelphi University is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work as sterile processing professionals in various healthcare settings. Sterile processing technicians play a crucial role in the decontamination, cleaning, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment. This comprehensive program covers essential topics such as instrumentation, processing of surgical instrumentation and moveable patient equipment, storage and inventory management, medical terminology, and infection prevention processes.

Program Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, learners will be able to:

• Describe various functions of Sterile Processing Department (SPD).
• Identify health and safety regulations, standards, and guidelines applicable to medical device processing.
• Define anatomy and physiology and understand their relevance to sterile processing work.
• Differentiate between regulated medical waste and non-infectious waste.
• Explain bloodborne pathogens and safety precautions in SPD.
• Understand appropriate dress code and the role of personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with OSHA regulations.
• Understand the organization of instrument sets and preparation of basins and textile packs.

Certification Opportunities:

After completing this program, learners will have the opportunity to pursue the following national/industry-recognized certification exam essential for entry-level employment:

• CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) offered by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA)

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity:

Learners who complete this program are eligible for an optional volunteer externship opportunity with local companies, agencies, or organizations aligned with sterile processing. This externship provides valuable hands-on experience, and an Externship Coordinator will assist learners in coordinating placement.
